One important thing I’ve learnt about maintaining a healthy lifestyle in general is having a stable routine or schedule of doing things. In Fitness, hair care and skin care plans and regimens are created to give you body this sort of stability and can really show some impressive results when you stick to it. But ill will write about the importance of keeping a solid regimen later in the article :).

This article is about my current regime; how to take care of my hair during the course of the week and do it again the next week and the next and it goes on… Yes I’m only 2 years natural(a newbie) but I did pay very close attention to what my hair likes and how to give my hair what it needs around my student life. I don’t track results with length (it’s a great way to track progress though) but rather, how soft and manageable my hair feels and the amount of times my hair dries out during the week. You know you have mastered your hair if your hair always feels soft, always manageable and always moisturized. Okay now let’s get into it!

WEEKLY

Mondays

I usually leave my hair in a puff or flat twists from my last wash day which is always Saturday. I have a spray bottle filled with water and my favorite leave-in, the As I a naturally leave in conditioner.

ree

This mixture is my hydration in a bottle. I just spray this all over my hair and instant softness. I don’t do much after I just leave my hair alone. I will leave the links to where you can purchase this product in Ghana and Nigeria. It is available on Amazon and many beauty supply stores as well.

Wednesdays

I usually re-moisturize my hair and refresh my hairstyle on Wednesdays whether it’s dry or not. I spray my water and leave in mix generously on my hair until it’s somewhat damp and seal and twist with my DIY Shea butter whip using Eya Naturals Shea body and Hair butter to seal in moisture. The product is so good on its own I just love whipped butter and adding my own essential oils. It is just as effective the way it comes from the store. You can find their products on their website and Instagram I will leave the links below.

Fridays

I do some heavy oiling on Fridays bi weekly. This is one of my game changing steps. I use my DIY oil mix which has coconut oil and olive oil as the main ingredients(carrier oils) because they penetrate and nourish the scalp and also when washed out removes excess sebum from the hair follicles (But let’s not get too technical here lol. I will discuss benefits of the oils in my secret mix

some other time). I thoroughly massage my scalp with heated oil for about 10 to 15 minutes and run the oil through my hair strands as well. To kill time I do it while watching a movie. Its incredibly soothing after a stressful school week and if done properly using Ayurveda methods can help you sleep a lot better and get rid of migraines apart from improving circulation in your scalp. A video that really helped me to get maximum benefits from my scalp massage will be inserted here:

After a good massage my hair is heavily coated with oil. I put on a plastic cap and a bonnet and head to bed. This step also doubles as my pre-poo. I don’t want to confuse you guys and get off track so if you don’t know what pre poo is you can learn all about it here:

Saturday

And its wash day! Contrary to what people believe, wash day doesn’t have to be ALL day. Don’t know about others but I love my Saturdays and wouldn’t want to stay in washing my hair the whole day.

When I wake up in the morning I head straight into the shower to wash my hair only. I only use a rinse out conditioner when I don’t have time to deep condition. That’s rare. The next step is to deep condition per the instruction on the product label. I never go more than 30 minutes unless it’s some sort of treatment. This is also rare. I rinse it out the DC while my hair is damp and use a leave in conditioner and my Shea butter whip. I usually leave it to dry in a shrunken fro or flat twist my hair and I am done. I will list all the products I use on Saturdays:

Shampoo: African black soap (Ghana) African Black Soap (Nigeria)

Rinse out conditioner: Biotin and Collagen Thickening conditioner (Ghana) Biotin and Collagen Thickening Conditioner(Nigeria). It’s AMAZING.

Deep conditioner: Eya Naturals deep conditioning treatment. Even more Amazing.

Leave In: As I am Naturally Leave In conditioner/ HotFro Leave in conditioner

Sealant: Shea Butter

So this is it for everything I have been doing to my hair so far. Not all the steps are considered necessary but my hair has thrived doing these. You can use my regimen as a point of reference to build one tailored specifically for your hair and you need to stick to it in order to see any real difference in your tresses.

Good luck on your journey and always remember your hair as a crown you never take off and treat it as such. :)
